Subject

On the first weekend of May, numerous ceremonies will celebrate five years of participation of Latvia and nine other "new member states" in the European Union. We will celebrate too, but in a less formal way, concentrating not on grandiloquent speeches but on the exchange of professional experiences, observations and ideas. Since the Union is based on the rule of law and the law is its most important instrument, five years of participation means most notably five years of implementation and application of European Union law. How is Union law observed and applied in daily legal practice? How has legal education developed in this new field of law in Latvia? What is the impact of the language problem? What about the cooperation of the Baltic states in matters of Union law? What issues are topical with regard to the situation in Latvia?

The evening seminar will consist of short lectures, leaving plenty of room for discussions. Interventions from the audience are welcome. There will be drinks and snacks at the breaks.

During the last months, the project group of the Baltisch-Deutsches Hochschulkontor has revised and enlarged its trilingual legal terminology list "Eiropas tiesību pamattermini" ("Grundwortschatz Europarecht"/"Basic vocabulary of European Union law"). We thank all users for their suggestions. The revised final version will be presented and distributed at the seminar.

All those interested are welcome!
